WSPU promotional postcard signed by Edith How-Martyn c1906-07
HOW-MARTYN, Edith (1875-1954). Signed postcard portrait, depicting Edith How-Martyn as “Bachelor of Science” and “Prisoner in Holloway”.
London: Women’s Social and Political Union, Buckingham Street, Strand, no date (circa 1906–1907).
Postcard (140 x 90 mm), printed in two halves with photographic portraits. Verso unused. Signed by Edith How-Martyn in ink across the lower margin. The printed W.S.P.U. designation and part of the Buckingham Street address struck through by her hand. A little light handling wear, but overall a well-preserved very good example.
A striking WSPU-issued postcard showing Edith How-Martyn in dual roles: as an educated woman and as a suffragette prisoner in Holloway. The postcard was issued before How-Martyn’s break with the WSPU in 1907. Her deletion of the printed W.S.P.U. affiliation and address, combined with her signature, suggests that this example was signed after her departure, when she became a leading figure in the formation of the Women’s Freedom League.
