First edition. 8vo. x, 213 pp., with 2 pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Publisher's cloth with the Eric Gill design to the upper board, repeated on the original dust jacket. Bookplate of F. M. Stewart to the front pastedown. A very good copy, the contents clean and the binding sound. The dust jacket is toned and somewhat brittle, with rubbing, small chips and short tears at the spine ends and extremities, but remains substantially complete.
 
Published as part of the XXth Century Library, edited by V. K. Krishna Menon. The striking jacket and board design is by Eric Gill and depicts Laocoon struggling with the serpents. Holtby's study considers the changing position of women in modern society and was published at the height of her engagement with feminist, social and political questions. The volume is dedicated to Dame Ethel Smyth and Cicely Hamilton, "who did more than write 'The March of the Women',". Rare with the dust wrapper.
