First edition. Octavo. xi, 13-288 pp. Original red cloth, lettered in black to upper board and spine.

Spine a shade faded, with light general handling wear to the cloth. First preliminary leaf browned, with occasional light foxing internally, largely confined to the upper edge. Previous owner's name to the front free endpaper, with a small contemporary bookseller's ticket to the upper corner of the front pastedown. Overall a Very Good copy.

 

The fourth and final novel in Haggard's sequence concerning Ayesha, and conceived as an account of her earlier life. Haggard explicitly describes the work in his dedication as "the last romance that will be written concerning 'She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed'." The book was dedicated to the memory of Andrew Lang, to whom Haggard had also dedicated She and Ayesha.
