Why Women Protest at Liberal Meetings: a WSPU Broadside c1909-1910
WOMEN’S SOCIAL AND POLITICAL UNION (WSPU). Why Women Protest at Liberal Meetings.
[London: The Woman’s Press, c.1909–1910].
Single sheet broadside, 190 x 250 mm. old fold lines, with light creasing and minor handling wear; a little surface marking; overall about about very good.
A rare WSPU propaganda broadside setting out the justification for militant disruption of Liberal Party meetings at the height of the suffrage campaign. The text directly addresses the failure of the Liberal government to introduce a women’s suffrage bill despite widespread parliamentary support, and explicitly frames protest and confrontation as a necessary continuation of earlier struggles for enfranchisement. The sheet quotes a Liberal MP in partial defence of suffragette tactics and closes with a clear statement that agitation will continue until the vote is secured.
Surviving broadsides of this kind printed by the WSPU are uncommon.
