Warning from Mr Churchill: a fundraising leaflet Winston S. Churchill 1943
Churchill, Winston S. (1874-1965). Warning from Mr Churchill. London: Over-Seas League Tobacco Fund, [1943].
Single leaf, 210 x 260 mm, printed on both sides in red and black. Portrait of Churchill by Walter Stoneman, with photographs of Montgomery distributing cigarettes and servicemen receiving them on the reverse. Original horizontal and vertical folds, with a few light creases towards the upper right corner. Donation form intact and unused. Very good.
A rare wartime fundraising leaflet using Churchill's warning to the House of Commons on 21 September 1943 that the bloodiest fighting for Britain and the United States still lay ahead. The appeal requests donations to supply cigarettes to troops, sailors, airmen, wounded servicemen and prisoners of war, promising 1,000 cigarettes for every pound contributed. The reverse announces that nearly 400 million gift cigarettes have already been distributed, reproduces General Alexander's thanks and urges readers to send donations in time for Christmas. An illustrated example of Churchill's words and image being used to encourage practical support for the fighting services.
