Victorian card game 'Dickens snap' Charles Dickens c1875-80
[DICKENS, Charles] Dickens snap: A victorian card game depicting characters from the works of Charles Dickens. [Hull: W.F. Good, c.1875-80].
32 cards (being one complete half-pack of the original game of 64 cards), each card c.90 x 65 mm, with square-cut corners, comprising 8-character groups with 4 identical cards of each. Colour-printed illustrations of Dickensian figures including Mr Pickwick, Micawber, Nicholas Nickleby, Bob Cratchit, Little Nell and others. Cards lightly worn at edges with minor soiling, but colours bright and well preserved. A very good set.
A scarce surviving half-pack of the Victorian card game "Dickens Snap". The game was produced in two half-packs, each complete, and only when combined did they form the full 64-card set. Survival of even single packs appears uncommon, and complete sets are notably rare. A rare example of Victorian literary ephemera, and an attractive survival of a popular parlour game tied to Dickens's enduring cultural presence.
