Typed letter from the private secretary to Emmeline Pethick Lawrence WSPU 1912

Single sheet, 205 x 260 mm, printed WSPU letterhead with typed letter and signature of Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence's private secretary, dated 11 April 1912. Old horizontal and vertical folds, otherwise very good. The sheet bears an exceptional contemporary "Votes for Women" watermark depicting the Union's emblem and slogan, visible when held to the light.
 
An attractive Women's Social and Political Union letter written on behalf of Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, one of the movement's principal leaders and Honorary Treasurer. The printed heading names many of the leading figures of the suffrage campaign, including Mrs Pankhurst, Mrs Pethick-Lawrence, Miss Christabel Pankhurst, Annie Kenney, Elizabeth Robins, Mary Neal and Charlotte Despard's contemporary colleague Mrs Wolstenholme Elmy.
 
Written shortly after the great Albert Hall meeting of April 1912, the letter thanks the recipient on Mrs Pethick-Lawrence's behalf, recalling "that beautiful procession of representatives of the Local Unions at the Albert Hall Meeting" and the significance of the gifts presented there. It continues that "the hearts of all the Leaders are filled with joy and pride in the splendid spirit of all their colleagues in this Movement and with a sense of complete confidence that they will bring our flag to victory."
 
Particularly noteworthy is the paper itself. Rather than ordinary stationery, the letter is written on specially manufactured WSPU paper incorporating a large "Votes for Women" watermark.
