Three Men On The Bummel by Jerome K. Jerome first edition 1900
JEROME, Jerome K. (1859-1927). Three Men on the Bummel. Illustrated by L. Raven Hill. Bristol: J. W. Arrowsmith; London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent and Co. Limited, [1900].
First edition. Octavo, 328 pp. Illustrated frontispiece with tissue guard and black-and-white illustrations throughout by Leonard Raven-Hill. Publisher's original burgundy ribbed cloth, the upper board lettered and decorated in red, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt. The odd small mark to the upper board and a mark to the lower with slight rubbing to the spine ends. Light spotting to the frontispiece tissue guard and the final few pages, the contents otherwise notably clean. A very good or better copy, retaining the rich colour of the cloth without fading to the spine.
The sequel to Three Men in a Boat, published eleven years after its predecessor, reuniting J., George and Harris for a cycling holiday through Germany, including the Black Forest. Their encounters provide the setting for Jerome's observations on travel, friendship and the habits of English tourists abroad. Issued as volume XXXVI of Arrowsmith's 3/6 Series.
