The Three Impostors by Arthur Machen first edition 1895
MACHEN, Arthur; BEARDSLEY, Aubrey. The Three Impostors; or, The Transmutations.
London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1895.
8vo, viii, 290 pp., with 14pp keynotes catalogue and 16 pp. publisher’s catalogue at rear dated 1895.
Original publisher’s dark green cloth, designed by Aubrey Beardsley, with gilt and blind decorative borders to upper cover and spine, spine lettered in gilt, device and date “1895” to lower cover.
A very good or better copy; cloth clean and bright, slight bumping to lower corners, a little rubbing at extremities, internally clean with some toning to paper as usual.
First edition of one of Machen’s most important early works, a collection of interlinked decadent and weird tales including “The Novel of the Black Seal” and “The Novel of the White Powder,” Beardsley lends a hand with the designed publisher's binding and title page. An attractive example of a key Machen title.
