The Song of the Suffragists song sheet WSPU c1910
[Women's Social and Political Union]. The Song of the Suffragists.
Galashiels, printed and published by John McQueen & Son, [circa 1910].
Single sheet, 110 × 150 mm, printed in red and black on thin paper; text on recto only, verso blank.
Condition good: lightly creased with handling wear and softening to paper; no loss to text; a fragile but complete survival.
A rare Scottish suffrage song sheet, issued in pocket format and intended for chanting or communal singing at marches. The lyrics are explicitly political and confrontational, urging electoral opposition to Liberal candidates and directly invoking the colours of the militant suffrage movement: “the Green, White and Purple.” The chorus repeatedly demands: “Vote for the Women … and KEEP THE LIBERAL OUT!”. A rare song sheet, most likely around the time of the General Election in 1910.
