The Sleeping Beauty signed by Edmund Dulac to artist E. Y. Jones 1910
Dulac's presentation copy to his friend and fellow artist Ernest Yarrow Jones in the year of publication.
DULAC, Edmund (1882-1953); QUILLER-COUCH, Sir Arthur (1863-1944). The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales from the Old French. Illustrated by Edmund Dulac. London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1910].
First Dulac trade edition. Presentation copy inscribed and signed by Edmund Dulac to Ernest Yarrow Jones on the half-title. Quarto, 230x290mm, 131 pages, with thirty tipped-in colour plates, including the frontispiece, with tissue guards. Original red cloth, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt to the covers and spine. Corner tips lightly rubbed, with very slight wear to the edges and occasional patches of foxing, otherwise a near fine copy.
A collection of four fairy tales retold by Quiller-Couch: The Sleeping Beauty, Blue Beard, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast. Dulac's thirty colour illustrations accompany the stories within a volume whose binding, decorative title-page and text ornaments extend his designs throughout the book.
Inscribed to the painter, sculptor and illuminator Ernest Yarrow Jones (1872-1951), a longstanding friend and correspondent of Dulac. A particularly attractive association copy, retaining the publisher's richly gilt binding in unusually fresh condition. Provenance: Ernest and Mary Yarrow Jones, by descent.
