"The Modern Messenger of Death": The Sphere's remarkable illustrated account of the sinking of the Titanic, published twelve days after the disaster.

[THE TITANIC]; THE SPHERE. The Wreck of the Titanic. London, 27 April 1912.

An original issue with the twelve-page Titanic supplement. The Sphere: An Illustrated Newspaper for the Home, Vol. XLIX, No. 640. London, 27 April 1912. Folio, 440 x 310 mm. Original illustrated wrappers, the front cover after Fortunino Matania showing a newspaper seller carrying the placard "How the Titanic Went Down", beneath the caption "The Modern Messenger of Death!" Main issue lacking a single leaf comprising pp. 67-68; pp. 69-86 otherwise present, followed by xiv separately numbered pages of advertisements and editorial matter. With the original twelve-page Titanic supplement, 420 x 300 mm, pp. i-xii, loosely inserted as issued. Newspaper good, with some edge wear and creasing and a tear and weakness at the head of the spine, but remarkably well preserved for such an ephemeral publication. Supplement very good, with light handling and occasional minor creasing.

The newspaper contains extensive coverage of the tragedy, including the large portrait of Commander Edward J. Smith beneath the headline "'Be British': The Last Words of the 'Titanic's' Captain", scenes of mourning at Southampton, discussion of the forces acting upon the sinking ship, and numerous further illustrations and reports throughout. Titanic-related material appears on the front page and on pp. 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 76, 79 and 84. The missing p. 68 contained the opening page of survivor Lawrence Beesley's contemporary account of the disaster.

The accompanying supplement, entitled "The Wreck of the 'Titanic'", is particularly striking. Complete in twelve pages, it tells the story of the disaster through photographs, illustrations and five dramatic diagrammatic reconstructions. These include the first contact with the iceberg; the ship scraping past the berg; Fortunino Matania's dramatic double-page reconstruction, "How the 'Titanic' Gradually Sank Bow First with Her Lights Blazing to the Last"; the lowering of the boats; and the final phase of the sinking.

A scarce and contemporary record of the Titanic disaster, retaining the complete twelve-page illustrated supplement with its dramatic reconstructions of the sinking.
