A very good set from the library of the artist and designer Edward Bawden, with his pencilled note to the front pastedown of Volume I: "worth about £100 EB". Volume I with some marking to the right-hand portion of the upper board, a small patch coloured black to the front pastedown, and light foxing to the opening leaves. Volume II with light marking to the boards, mild wear at the spine ends, and the lower board bumped at the upper fore-corner, the impact causing some mild associated creasing to the corners of approximately the final 20-30 leaves. Otherwise both volumes remain sound and internally clean.
 
Grant's substantial chronological survey of English landscape painting from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, describing more than 500 painters. Originally published in these two volumes in 1926; a supplementary third volume followed in 1947, and the work was subsequently extensively revised and enlarged. A two volume set from Bawden's working library, with his own pencilled valuation and initials.
