CHURCHILL, Winston S.; PAGET, John. The New "Examen".

London: The Haworth Press, 1934.

8vo (260 x 170 mm). pp. 236. Printed on English hand-made paper by Sherratt & Hughes at the St Ann’s Press, Manchester. With a critical introduction by Winston S. Churchill. Publisher’s full native-dyed Niger morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, bound with raised bands and blind-tooled motifs, spine lettered in gilt; top edge gilt.

Limited edition, one of a small number of copies believed to be 50 signed by Churchill, this being No. 17.

A very good copy. Some light surface marking to boards and spine; minor rubbing at extremities. Internally clean. Lacking the original slipcase. Small and neat contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown.

A finely produced limited edition of Paget’s historical essays, issued with a new introduction by Churchill. The essays revisit key episodes of the later Stuart period, including the Massacre of Glencoe, the career of the Duke of Marlborough, and the historiography of Macaulay, advancing a revisionist critique of the established Whig interpretation of British history. Churchill’s introduction is of particular note in its implicit defence of Marlborough.
