The Battle of Waterloo by Chistopher Kelly first edition early issue 1816
KELLY, Christopher. A Full and Circumstantial Account of the Memorable Battle of Waterloo; The Second Restoration of Louis XVIII; and the Deportation of Napoleon Buonaparte to the Island of St. Helena. London: Thomas Kelly, 1816.
First edition, first or early state. Quarto. 509 pp. Contemporary full calf, rebacked preserving the original decorated spine. Gilt Greek-key border to boards, largely faded; spine rubbed with gilt also largely faded; boards rubbed and marked with several areas of surface abrasion. Hinges sound. Internally with occasional staining and grubbiness, and a few short marginal tears. With engraved frontispiece dated 1816, additional engraved title dated 26 April 1817, 18 engraved plates, and folding plan of the Battle of Waterloo with colour coding. The folding map is linen-backed, with some staining and wear. One or two plates bound out of sequence, but all present. Good.
An apparently first or early state of the first edition, with the letterpress title dated 1816 and the additional engraved title dated 26 April 1817. Copies are also encountered with letterpress title pages dated 1817 and 1818. The apparently anomalous 1817 date on the additional engraved title is consistent with other early copies.
The work covers Napoleon's return from Elba, the Waterloo campaign, the restoration of Louis XVIII, Napoleon's surrender and exile to St. Helena, together with biographical accounts of the principal commanders. Particularly desirable for the extensive suite of contemporary engravings and the folding battle plan.
