She was an Angel of Mercy [Nurse Edith Cavell] George Bert / Chas Britton 1915
BERT, George; BRITTON, Charles; and WRIGHT, Lawrence. She Was an Angel of Mercy. A Tribute to the Memory of Nurse Cavell. Song and Recitation. London: The Lawrence Wright Music Co., 1915.
Original pictorial sheet music, 4 pp., with photographic portrait of Edith Cavell to the front wrapper, words by George Bert and Charles Britton, music by Lawrence Wright, and a recitation following the song. A worn but complete copy. Toning and handling wear throughout, with staining and marking, creasing, numerous short tears and chips to the edges, including areas of loss, and splitting and small losses along the central fold. Further closed tears and weakness to the paper, particularly towards the lower margins and corners. The printing and text remain substantially unaffected and entirely legible. Good condition only, but a scarce survival of an ephemeral First World War publication.
A contemporary musical tribute to the British nurse Edith Cavell (1865-1915), published in the immediate aftermath of her execution by German firing squad in occupied Brussels on 12 October 1915. Cavell had helped Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium and rapidly became one of the most celebrated British martyrs of the First World War. The song describes her as "one of the Red Cross Band" and urges that "the mem'ry must not die", while the accompanying recitation explicitly presents Cavell as a martyr whose name would live on.
The front wrapper states that the publishers were devoting half the profits from the first 10,000 copies sold to the Cavell Memorial Fund. Copyright dated MCMXV. An uncommon piece of contemporary Cavell and First World War ephemera: I can trace a copy in the British Library, but no copies currently offered in commerce.
