£225.00Price

NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCIAL AND POLITICAL UNION. Second Annual Report, including Cash Statement and Subscription List for the Year ended February 29th, 1908, and Accounts of the Woman’s Press, January 1-December 31, 1907. London: The Woman’s Press, [1908].

Original printed grey wrappers, 240 x 150 mm, 31 numbered pages. The original staples have rusted away and the leaves and wrappers are consequently loose, but the pamphlet is complete. Contemporary pen scribbling and cancelled writing to the front wrapper, with some general light wear and marking; good.

A scarce early annual report of the Women’s Social and Political Union, issued during the increasingly militant phase of the campaign for women’s suffrage. The report includes the Union’s constitution and methods, its committee report, audited accounts, the financial records of the Woman’s Press, and an extensive list of subscribers. The committee included Emmeline Pankhurst, Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Christabel Pankhurst, Annie Kenney, Mary Gawthorpe, Teresa Billington-Greig, Elizabeth Robins and other leading figures in the militant suffrage movement.

Of particular importance is the section headed “Militant Action”, in which the Union warns that it will be for the Government to decide whether women are forced to take “stronger militant action than they have already done”. The report also announces the forthcoming great demonstration in Hyde Park on 21 June, describes preparations for the Albert Hall meeting, and records that Mrs Pankhurst was then in prison and therefore unable to sign the report.
