Photographic portraits signed by Emmeline and Frederick Pethick-Lawrence 1910
PETHICK-LAWRENCE, Emmeline (1867-1954) and Frederick (1871-1861). Pair of signed photographic portraits. London: Elliott and Fry, 1910.
Two original photographic portraits, each mounted to original studio boards. Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence measuring 140 x 200 mm, signed in ink to lower mount and dated 1910; Frederick Pethick-Lawrence measuring 140 x 100 mm, signed in ink to lower mount, dated in pencil to verso 1910. Photographs clean and well preserved; mounts with light handling, minor marking and trivial edge wear; overall very good.
The Pethick-Lawrences were central figures to the WSPU at this date, acting not only as major funders but as editors of Votes for Women and key strategists in its expansion and public presentation. Their position within the leadership was at its height around 1910, prior to the internal rupture of 1912 in which they were removed from the organisation following disagreements over the escalation of militant tactics. Photographic portraits of the couple signed, are scarce.
