Peronnik The Fool signed by George Moore first Hours Press 1928
First published book from Nancy Cunard's The Hours Press
MOORE, George. Peronnik the Fool. Chapelle-Reanville, Eure, France: The Hours Press, 1928.
Revised edition. Tall octavo. [4], 63, [1]pp. Original blue-grey cloth, titled and lettered in gilt to the upper board, spine plain. Number 62 of 200 copies, set by hand and privately printed on hand-press, each copy signed by the author. This copy signed by George Moore on the limitation leaf.
Very good. Spine toned, with light rubbing and minor wear to the extremities and a small dark mark to the lower portion of the upper board. A few scattered foxing marks internally, chiefly to the preliminary leaves, otherwise clean and sound.
The first book published by Nancy Cunard's Hours Press. The colophon records that the volume was finished printing on 11 December 1928 by Nancy Cunard and Maurice Levy and states explicitly that it was the first volume of The Hours Press.
The significance of this title lies particularly in its place at the beginning of Cunard's private press venture, which would go on to publish a notable group of modernist writers and poets. An attractive example of the inaugural Hours Press publication, one of only 200 copies and signed by George Moore. Now a difficult title to find.
