Peace and War speeches by Mr Eamon De Valera first edition 1944
DE VALERA, Eamon (1882-1975). Peace and War. Speeches by Mr. de Valera on International Affairs. Dublin: M. H. Gill and Son, Ltd., 1944.
First edition, scarce case-bound issue. 80 pages. Original green cloth-backed green boards, spine lettered in gilt, with the publisher's printed dust wrapper, retaining the price of 2/6 on the front flap. Minor rubbing to the binding edges. Dust wrapper toned, more noticeably at the spine, with light edge wear and a short split at the foot of the spine Mark at the top of the front panel. A very good copy in a very good dust wrapper.
A collection of de Valera's speeches delivered at Geneva between 1932 and 1938, together with four broadcasts, three from Geneva and one from Radio Eireann. Published during the Second World War, the volume presents his arguments for strengthening the League of Nations and preserving international peace during the years preceding its collapse as an effective restraint on aggression. The preface explicitly frames the speeches as a record of Ireland's efforts to avert the war.
An uncommon example in the publisher's case binding with its original priced dust wrapper, rather than the familiar paper wrappers.
