Order of Service & Invitation to the funeral of Queen Alexander 1925
QUEEN ALEXANDRA. Order of Service + an invitation, with the original envelope.
Westminster Abbey. Funeral Service for Her Late Majesty Queen Alexandra. London, 1925.
4to (200 x 130 mm). 16 pages including wrappers. Printed order of service for the funeral held at Westminster Abbey on Friday, 27 November 1925 at 11.30 a.m. Together with the original printed admission ticket (120 x 100 mm), stamped A South Transept and completed in manuscript for Colonel Cockburn, and the original envelope bearing the printed seal of the Ceremonial Department, St James’s Palace. Light creasing to the order of service, minor handling marks; ticket clean; envelope lightly toned with some wear to edges. A complete and well-preserved ceremonial grouping. Near fine.
The order of service records the full liturgy and music, including works by Bach, Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Grieg, reflecting the scale and formality of Queen Alexandra’s funeral. The accompanying ticket admits the named holder via Poets’ Corner to the South Transept, indicating allocated seating within the Abbey for invited attendees under the direction of the Lord Chamberlain. The named recipient is most likely Colonel Sir Eric Alexander Cockburn (1879-1967) of the Scots Guards, who moved within royal household circles and later served as Keeper of the Privy Purse.
