Oh! The Suffragettes an anti-suffrage music sheet by Ern Radcliffe
RADCLIFFE, Ern. Oh! The Suffragettes.
London: E. Marks & Son, [c.1909–1912].
Single printed song sheet, four pages (one bifolium), approx. 250 × 340 mm. Printed in purple ink, with pictorial cover illustration. Light overall toning; small edge wear with small areas of loss to joins and minor creasing; a sound, complete example. Very good.
Satirical anti-suffrage song sheet issued by E. Marks & Son as part of their popular “Champion Edition” series, written and composed by Ern Radcliffe. The song was intended for general sale and informal performance — domestic, social, or amateur — rather than for a named music hall or specific production. Despite first appearances, the music sheet through Radcliffe's lyrics, takes a cynical swipe at the suffragettes, with the writer advising women to stay at home or else end up being dealt the same fate. "up came the coppers with truncheons and toppers, and marched them off like wrong uns."
An uncommon survival of anti-suffrage ephemera.
