London: Women’s Social & Political Union, Head Offices 4 Clement’s Inn, Strand, W.C.; Local Committee Rooms, 82 Tower Bridge Road, Bermondsey. Printed and Published by the National Women’s Social and Political Union. [c.1909].
Single sheet, 125 × 190 mm, printed in purple on wove paper. Very good. Central horizontal fold; light creasing and handling wear; paper clean and complete without loss.
A WSPU campaign song-sheet produced for Bermondsey, adapting the Cornish patriotic song “Trelawney” for suffrage agitation. The text explicitly targets Asquith and the Liberal government — “We’ll keep the Liberal out!” — and appeals directly to Voters true of Bermondsey, placing it within the election strategy adopted by the Union, when militant policy turned towards organised opposition to Liberal candidates.
Song sheets such as this were designed for open-air meetings and processions and were rarely preserved beyond their immediate political moment. A strong example of WSPU local electoral propaganda.
