Official programme for the Harvard-Boston Aero Meet of 1910, Wright Brothers
HARVARD-BOSTON AERO MEET. September Third to Thirteenth 1910.
Harvard Aeronautical Society, Atlantic, Massachusetts: Harvard Aviation Field, 1910.
8vo, 48 pp. plus original 6-page supplemental insert with map of Harvard Aviation Field. Original pictorial wrappers printed in red, grey and black. Saddle stitched. Wrappers worn and marked, some foxing and staining, particularly to preliminaries and outer leaves, old vertical fold to insert, but complete and sound overall. A good copy of a fragile survival retaining the scarce supplemental programme and field map.
Official programme for the Harvard-Boston Aero Meet of 1910, one of the earliest major aviation meetings held in the United States during the pioneering era of powered flight. The programme includes a history of aeronautics and the Wright Brothers, illustrations and biographies of aviators, descriptions of aircraft and flying techniques, competition rules, prize structures, and organisational details for the meeting.
Particularly notable is the survival of the original supplemental insert containing an updated programme and a plan of Harvard Aviation Field at Atlantic, Massachusetts. The event offered substantial prizes for speed, altitude, duration, distance, and landing accuracy competitions, reflecting the rapid technical development and public fascination surrounding aviation only a few years after the Wright Brothers' first flights.
