First edition. Original blue cloth, gilt, in the original pictorial dust wrapper. xx, 286 pp. Octavo. Wrapper chipped at the head and foot of the spine with a few short tears and a circular stain to the left side of the front panel. Cloth clean and bright. Rough cut page edges with foxing to the edges and moderate foxing to the first and last few leaves, and continued foxing throughout. Overall about Very Good.
Harry Furniss (1854-1925) was one of Britain's leading caricaturists and illustrators, best known for his work for Punch, The Illustrated London News, and for illustrating the works of Charles Dickens and Lewis Carroll. This autobiography recalls his early career in London journalism, the theatrical world of the late Victorian period, and his encounters with many of the leading literary, artistic and political figures of the day. Illustrated throughout with 123 drawings by the author. Copies retaining the original pictorial dust wrapper are uncommon.
