GOLDING, Louis. Mr. Emmanuel
London, Rich & Cowan Ltd., 1939.
Octavo, pp. 456. Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained in brown. Publisher’s pictorial dust jacket, price clipped. Cloth clean and firm. Light foxing to the text block edges and scattered light foxing to the preliminaries; contents otherwise clean. Dust jacket toned at the spine with some general surface soiling, small tear to the top left hand of the front panel and light wear to the edges but complete and presenting well. Overall, a very good copy.
First edition of this Second World War novel by Louis Golding, published in the year war broke out. The book follows the Jewish Emmanuel family as events in Germany darken and the consequences of Nazism become unavoidable. Golding was one of the most prominent British Jewish novelists of the interwar period, and this title is his response to fascism and antisemitism at the outset of the conflict. A book that is increasingly uncommon with the jacket.
