Local branch WSPU songsheet A Free Field / Freedom of Speech 1909
WIMBLEDON WOMEN’S SOCIAL AND POLITICAL UNION. Leaflet 3. A Free Field. (Air: “A-Hunting we will go.”) Leaflet 4. Freedom of Speech. (To the original Air of “Lilli-bulero.”) Jan., 1909.
Wimbledon: W.S.P.U., Fabo, Marryat Road, Wimbledon. [1909].
Single sheet, 290 × 220 mm, comprising two numbered Wimbledon W.S.P.U. song leaflets (3 and 4).
Good. Central vertical and horizontal folds; light creasing and handling wear; a few small stains and areas of light browning, as typical of distributed material; complete.
Two locally issued Wimbledon W.S.P.U. campaign songs, dated January 1909, adapting popular airs for suffrage purposes. “A Free Field” attacks Liberal obstruction and names Asquith directly, while “Freedom of Speech” invokes imprisonment, ejection from meetings, and organised resistance. A strong example of early provincial W.S.P.U. printed propaganda.
