Original lithograph from Victor Adam's Retour en France des Depouilles Mortelles de Napoleon, the celebrated suite documenting the Retour des Cendres ceremonies of 1840. The plate depicts Napoleon's riderless battle horse draped in imperial funerary cloth during the funeral procession held in Paris following the return of the emperor's remains from St Helena. Published by Jeannin of the Place du Louvre and issued as part of the original first edition series of twenty large-format lithographs commemorating the repatriation ceremonies.
