John Milton's epitaph - a third folio leaf William Shakespeare 1664
SHAKESPEARE, Wiliam; MILTON, John; HOLLAND, Hugh. MILTON’S EPITAPH ON SHAKESPEARE – A Leaf from the Third Folio, 1664 (Hugh Holland verso).
Folio leaf (c. 300 x 190 mm), extracted from the Third Folio of Shakespeare (London: printed for P. Chetwind, 1664). Double column. The recto printing John Milton’s epitaph on Shakespeare, opening “What needs my Shakespeare for his honoured bones…”, the verso with Hugh Holland’s commendatory verses.
Mounted within a black card display mount, the leaf secured at edges with tape, both sides visible. Light toning and scattered spotting, a few small marks including minor ink stain to recto, but a clean, well-preserved example. About very good.
A desirable leaf from the Third Folio, containing John Milton’s celebrated epitaph on Shakespeare, first printed in the Second Folio of 1632 and retained in subsequent editions. The poem stands among the earliest and most influential literary responses to Shakespeare. It also represents Milton’s first appearance in print. Milton’s epitaph remain among the most sought-after of the non-illustrated leaves.
