Joan Haste by H. Rider Haggard first edition 1895
HAGGARD, H. Rider. Joan Haste. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1895.
First edition. Octavo. x, 425pp., followed by a 24-page publisher's catalogue. Frontispiece and 19 further illustrations by F. S. Wilson. Original blue-grey cloth with bevelled boards, titles in gilt to the upper board and spine, black endpapers.
Very good. The boards and spine are evenly toned, with only light rubbing and minor wear to the extremities. Two small areas of dark ink or colour to the upper outer corners of the boards. Internally clean, with very little foxing. A small stain affects the corner of the publisher's catalogue and the final few leaves. Binding sound.
First edition of Haggard's 1895 novel, a domestic and social romance rather than one of the African adventure stories for which he is best known. Joan Haste was first serialised in The Pall Mall Magazine before publication in book form. An attractive copy in the original cloth.
