Engraved game sheet (jeu de l'oie), approx. 360 x 270 mm, some foxing and light browning, more pronounced at margins; a few small marks and areas of surface wear, but the impression remains clear. Good.
The game comprises of 63 numbered compartments arranged in a circular sequence around a central vignette of the Assemblee Nationale. Each compartment contains an engraved scene with caption, illustrating successive events of the early French Revolution, including the reunion of the three estates, unrest in Paris, the storming of the Bastille, the march to Versailles, the arrest of the King at Varennes, and his return to Paris. The game culminates in the central Assembly scene beneath a cartouche celebrating the Constitution of 1791 and the establishment of Louis XVI as “roi constitutionnel des Francais”. A contemporary revolutionary game of the goose sheet presenting the events of 1789–1791 in sequential visual form, and a rarity with none found in commerce or in auction records.
