£75.00Price

SITWELL, Edith. Jane Barston 1719-1746. London: Faber & Faber, 1931.

Large paper limited edition, number 247 of only 250 copies printed on English hand-made paper and signed by Edith Sitwell on the limitation page. Tall octavo, original publisher's bright yellow cloth lettered in gilt to the upper board. A near fine copy with just the lightest signs of handling and a couple of tiny marks to the cloth, internally exceptionally clean and fresh.

Illustrated throughout by R. A. Davies with striking wood engravings, including a two-colour full-page illustration and numerous black-and-white decorations. An attractive example of the thirty-sixth volume in the Ariel Poems series.

A finely produced edition of Edith Sitwell's poem inspired by the eighteenth-century servant girl Jane Barston (1719-1746), whose tragic life became the subject of one of Sitwell's most lyrical narrative poems. Issued as part of Faber's celebrated Ariel Poems series, the work combines Sitwell's distinctive poetic voice with R. A. Davies' modernist wood engravings.
