Hand-coloured stipple-engraved portrait of Admiral Lord Nelson c1815
NELSON, Lord Horatio; CHAPMAN, John. Hand-coloured stipple-engraved portrait of Admiral Lord Nelson. [London, c.1815].
Stipple engraving with contemporary hand-colouring, image 120 x 170 mm within oval border, on sheet 200 x 270 mm. Engraved by John Chapman. Contemporary paper watermarked 1815. A few small edge nicks and trivial marks to margins, otherwise a bright, well-preserved example with strong original colouring. Very good.
A commemorative portrait of Britain's greatest naval hero issued in the year of Waterloo and on the tenth anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson is depicted in naval uniform beneath a patriotic cartouche incorporating the Union Flag and Trafalgar. The engraving was executed by John Chapman, one of the more accomplished portrait engravers of the period, whose work is represented extensively in the National Portrait Gallery.
A rare Nelson commemorative portrait, not found in commerce, but with one located in the Royal Greenwich Museum.
