£125.00Price

CALDECOTT, Randolph. Gleanings from the Graphic. Edward Bawden's Copy. London: George Routledge & Sons, 1889.

First edition. Oblong folio, 380 x 280mm. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. 84pp. Portrait frontispiece and numerous illustrations throughout, including colour illustrations. A good copy from the library of the artist and designer Edward Bawden, with his pictorial bookplate to the front pastedown. The boards are rubbed, marked and scuffed, with wear and some surface loss around the edges and corners; chipping and loss at the lower end of the spine. Internally generally clean and sound.

Published three years after Caldecott's death, the volume gathers drawings originally contributed to The Graphic between 1877 and 1886, including Sketches at Trouville, Brighton, Letters from Monaco, A Meet on Exmoor, Christmas Visitors, and Paul and Virginia. Caldecott was one of the defining figures of late Victorian illustration, and the provenance here is particularly appropriate: this copy belonged to Edward Bawden, one of the leading British illustrators and graphic artists of the twentieth century.
