Full of Fun by Louis Wain and Clifford Bingham first edition 1908

£250.00Price

WAIN, Louis; BINGHAM, Clifford. Full of Fun. London: Ernest Nister; New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., [1908].

First edition. Quarto, 250 x 210 mm. Original pictorial boards with cloth spine, the front cover with a particularly striking colour illustration by Louis Wain. 88 unnumbered pages, including title and colour frontispiece, followed by three pages of publisher's advertisements. Illustrated throughout with numerous black-and-white drawings by Wain, many full-page or extending across double-page spreads. Very good. Boards lightly rubbed and marked with some wear to the edges and corners; internally generally clean with occasional spotting. Old sellotape repair at the gutter between the colour frontispiece and title page has left the usual brown adhesive staining, but otherwise the contents remain well preserved.

An early Louis Wain book, with verses by Clifton Bingham and a succession of Wain's anthropomorphic cats engaged in the sort of thoroughly human activities for which he became famous. The illustrations include cats playing cricket and football, attending weddings, losing spectacles and becoming involved in a variety of domestic and social mishaps.

A colour frontispiece depicts a cat wedding, while the remainder of the book is densely illustrated in black and white. An attractive survival.
