PLUCHE, Noël-Antoine. Four celestial charts from Spectacle de la Nature: or, Nature Display’d… Translated by John Baptist de Freval.
London: R. Francklin et al., from Volume IV 1740 (Third Edition).
Four copper-engraved celestial charts on laid paper (plates 7–10; pp. 141–144), each c.165 × 300 mm, uncoloured, as issued. Clear impressions with visible chain-lines; central vertical fold-marks and a few short marginal tears, otherwise very good.
The First and Second Parts of the Northern Celestial Hemisphere; and the First and Second Parts of the Southern Celestial Hemisphere. Engraved for the English edition of Pluche’s Spectacle de la Nature, these plates correspond to the astronomical section of Volume IV of the 1740 third edition.
A complete set of four matching hemispherical star maps, each sheet presenting a quadrant projection of the heavens, divided into “First” and “Second” parts. The constellations are shown as classical mythological figures, with the principal stars plotted and the ecliptic, equinoctial line, and polar regions marked.
