CHARLOTTE BAWDEN (NEE EPTON'S) COPY

FRY, Roger. Flemish Art: A Critical Survey.

London: Chatto & Windus, 1927.

Quarto. 56pp. Illustrated with numerous monochrome reproductions. Publisher's decorative paper-covered boards designed in an Arts and Crafts style, lettered to spine. Without the dust wrapper. Some rubbing and wear to extremities, corners a little bumped, occasional foxing throughout, but a sound about very good copy overall. Ownership signature of Charlotte Bawden to front free endpaper.

First edition of this concise survey of Flemish painting by the influential critic, painter and Bloomsbury figure Roger Fry, whose writings played a central role in shaping British responses to European art in the early twentieth century.

From the library of the artist and designer Charlotte Bawden (nee Epton), who studied at the Royal College of Art alongside husband Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious. The association is particularly apt given Roger Fry's influence on the development of modern British art and design in the 1920s and 1930s.
