Expiation by Elizabeth Von Arnim first edition 1929
VON ARNIM, Elizabeth. Expiation. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1929.
First edition. Octavo. [iv], 381pp, with one page of publisher's advertisements at rear. Publisher's green cloth in the original dust wrapper.
Near Fine in a Very Good dust wrapper. The book is bright and clean, with only slight toning to the spine. The wrapper is complete across the panels and retains the original 7/6 price to the front flap; with some general edge wear and creasing, and a moderate chip with loss at the foot of the spine. An unusually well-preserved example of the scarce original wrapper.
A sharp social comedy centred on Milly Botts, a newly widowed woman whose position within her respectable middle-class family is threatened when it emerges that she had been conducting an affair. Von Arnim uses the situation to expose the hypocrisies of conventional morality, particularly the harsher judgement reserved for women.
The first edition of this book retaining the original dust wrapper is scarce.
