NEVINSON, Henry W. Essays in Freedom. Presentation Copy Inscribed to Evelyn Sharp. London: Duckworth & Co., 1909.

First edition. Octavo. xvii, 329 pp. Original green cloth, gilt titles to spine, blind rules to boards, pages uncut. Inscribed by Nevinson on the front free endpaper: "To Evelyn Sharp / from H.W.N. / May 15. 1909." Light rubbing and minor wear to cloth, spine a little dulled, some toning to page edges, internally clean. A very good copy.

An excellent presentation copy, inscribed in the year of publication by the journalist, author and political campaigner Henry W. Nevinson (1856-1941) to the writer and suffragist Evelyn Sharp (1869-1955). Nevinson and Sharp had begun a relationship in 1903, while Nevinson was still married to Margaret Nevinson, and remained closely associated for some thirty years before eventually marrying in 1933. Sharp became an important figure in the women's suffrage movement and a prominent journalist, contributing extensively to the Manchester Guardian.

Essays in Freedom gathers Nevinson's writings around liberty, democracy, literature and political independence. An interesting signed association from Nevinson to Sharp.
