Eric Brighteyes by H. Rider Haggard first edition 1891
HAGGARD, H. Rider. Eric Brighteyes. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1891.
First edition. Octavo. xiv, 319 pp., followed by a 16-page publisher's catalogue. With numerous illustrations by Lancelot Speed. Publisher's dark cloth, upper board and spine lettered in gilt.
A very good copy. The spine is faded, with some wear and light fraying at the spine ends. The boards remain generally clean and presentable, with the gilt to the upper board still bright. Internally clean and sound.
Eric Brighteyes is Haggard's Icelandic historical romance, written in the manner of the Norse sagas and set in Viking-age Iceland. The story follows Eric Thorgrimursson and his turbulent love for Gudruda, with rivalry, feud, violence and supernatural elements woven through the narrative. With excellent Lancelot Speed illustrations throughout.
