3 Southampton Row, [no date, early 19th century].

A commercial portrait proof accompanied by a manuscript note in pencil by the artist, relating to its circulation. The engraved likeness, executed in fine stipple and line, depicts a middle-aged gentleman. The note, written from Southampton Row—an address associated in the early nineteenth century with engravers and print publishers—refers to forwarding a proof for publication, consistent with trade practice.
The signature appears attributable to Robert William Sievier (1794–1865), portrait engraver and medallist, who is recorded to have had a studio at Southampton Row during the period.
