Original large-format lithograph from Victor Adam's Retour en France des Depouilles Mortelles de Napoleon, the important contemporary suite of 20 plates commemorating the Retour des Cendres ceremonies of 1840. The scene depicts the ceremonial landing of Napoleon's remains at Courbevoie on 15 December 1840, after their return from St Helena aboard the Belle-Poule. Crowds line the Seine while artillery salutes mark the arrival of the imperial cortège before its procession into Paris.
