Community Bridge Scoring Pad illustrated by W. Heath Robinson c1925
ROBINSON, W. Heath (1872–1944). “Community” Bridge Scoring Pad. Valentine’s Bridge Scorers, Made in Great Britain, [c.1925].
Narrow 8vo format (210 × 85 mm). Original pale blue printed wrappers with circular colour vignette to upper cover. 26 unused scoring sheets, each printed with one of seven different colour illustrations by Heath Robinson (three sequences of seven designs and one sequence of five, as issued). No stubs; entirely unused. A few light marks to wrappers; internally clean and bright. Overall very good or better.
A charming example of Heath Robinson’s commercial graphic work, produced for the growing popularity of Auction Bridge. Each scoring sheet is headed with a different comic vignette — including “London’s burning”, “Where are you going to, my pretty maid?”, and “A-Hunting we will go” — depicting card players in characteristically absurd and chaotic situations. The internal scoring table retains the rules for Standard Auction Bridge, to the inside front cover. Uncommon, with no others for sale in commerce.
