But it Still Goes On by Robert Graves first edition 1930

GRAVES, Robert (1895-1985). But It Still Goes On. An Accumulation. London & Toronto: Jonathan Cape, 1930.

First edition, second impression, first state. Octavo, 315 pp. Publisher's original bright green cloth, lettered in gilt to the spine, with the publisher's device blind-stamped to the lower board. A narrow strip of surface soiling along the foot of the upper board and one or two small foxing spots to the text-block edges, otherwise near fine. In the original unclipped dustwrapper, priced 10s. 6d. net, with a tiny nick to the lower edge of the front panel and slight rubbing and creasing to the head of the spine. An exceptionally fresh, near fine wrapper, particularly striking for its clean, untoned spine and clear plum lettering.

A collection of autobiographical prose, fiction and drama, presented as an appendix to Good-bye to All That. Includes a substantial postscript to that autobiography, the stories "Old Papa Johnson", "Avocado Pears" and "The Shout", followed by "A Journal of Curiosities" incorporating the first and last chapters of "The Autobiography of Baal". The volume concludes with the play from which it takes its title.

Bibliographically complex: all British impressions retain the statement "First Published 1930", while successive alterations to the text distinguish the impressions and states. The first impression initially included a reference to "The Child She Bare" on page 157; this was removed by substituting a cancel leaf. In the second impression the amended text was incorporated into an integral leaf. A further alteration followed a copyright complaint concerning two letters addressed "Dear Sir Henry", reproduced on pages 130-132; these were replaced with an apology and explanation by Graves. The present copy retains the letters but has the amended text on an integral leaf at pages 157-158, identifying it as the second impression, first state. Higginson & Williams A35c.
