Single sheet folded on the printed letterhead of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, written on one side, signed. Old folds, otherwise in very good or better condition.
 
Administrative correspondence from William Sandys Wright Vaux, antiquary, numismatist, Keeper of Coins and Medals at the British Museum, and long-serving Secretary of the Royal Asiatic Society. Addressed to the bibliographer and indexer Henry Benjamin Wheatley, the letter grants permission for the annual meeting of the Index Society to be held at the Society's rooms in Albemarle Street, requesting an estimate of attendance so that suitable accommodation and seating may be arranged.
 
The Index Society, founded in 1877, sought to promote the preparation and publication of indexes to historical records, manuscripts and printed works. Wheatley was among its principal officers and later became one of the most influential figures in British bibliography and indexing, remembered particularly for How to Make an Index (1888). An attractive association between two prominent Victorian scholars, linking the Royal Asiatic Society and the early history of the Index Society.
