Autograph letter signed by writer Eleanor Farjeon dated 1923
FARJEON, Eleanor (1881–1965). Autograph letter signed about her novel Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard. 137 Fellows Road, N.W.3, 20 September 1923.
Two pages on a single bifolium, written in black ink. Horizontal and vertical folds as issued. Small splits at the ends of the central horizontal fold with light handling wear and a few stains to the centre fold of the second page; a few light marks; otherwise good.
A letter written by Farjeon shortly after the publication of Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard (1921), thanking her correspondent for writing about Martin Pippin and expressing pleasure at hearing from readers who admired the book. Farjeon reflects on Wiltshire, recalling “the old stone houses and manors within a day’s walk of Chippenham” and describing Lacock as appearing “as though it grew complete and perfect out of a single mind”.
An attractive early letter from Farjeon during the period in which her reputation as a writer of children’s literature was being established. She would go on to be the first winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Medal.
