Autograph letter signed by theatre manager John Baldwin Buckstone
BUCKSTONE, John Baldwin (1802–1879), manager of the Haymarket Theatre and actor. Autograph letter signed to fellow theatre manager Benjamin Nottingham Webster (1797–1882), [London, n.d.].
Single sheet folded, written on one side in brown ink, signed by Buckstone. Light folds from original dispatch, otherwise in clean, presentable condition. very good.
Buckstone, actor, dramatist and manager of the Haymarket Theatre, here writes to his fellow actor-manager Benjamin Nottingham Webster concerning casting arrangements for a forthcoming production. Webster had suggested the comic actress Fanny Stirling, but Buckstone explains here that he already has “three ladies in view” and therefore has “nothing for her to do”. He adds that he is somewhat overworked and unwilling to incur further expense until he can judge what may be achieved during the remaining fractional part of the season.
An interesting letter involving three well known victorian names of the theatre.
