Autograph letter signed by Spy illustrator Sir Leslie Ward to Luther Munday 1897

WARD, Sir Leslie (1851-1922, "Spy"). Autograph letter signed to George Luther Munday regarding a friend's book and its submission to an editor. Dated 28th January 1897.
 
Single sheet, approximately 110 x 180 mm, written on one side and signed "Leslie Ward", dated 27 January 1897 from 13 Bloomfield Place, S.W. Mourning paper. Old central fold, otherwise very good.
 
A letter from the celebrated Vanity Fair caricaturist Sir Leslie Ward ("Spy") to the theatrical manager and playwright George Luther Munday (1857-1922). Ward writes that he has been intending to visit Munday and hopes to do so shortly, before commenting that he hopes "they will give a good notice of your friend's book which I gave to the editor immediately it reached me", thanking Munday for his kind words.
 
George Luther Munday was secretary of London's influential Lyric Club, a theatre director and organiser of charitable entertainments, later acting as manager to Sir Charles Wyndham and Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. He is perhaps best remembered today as a friend and associate of Oscar Wilde, recording many of his literary and theatrical acquaintances in his memoir A Chronicle of Friendships (1912).
 
Sir Leslie Ward, under the pseudonym "Spy", produced more than 1,300 caricatures for Vanity Fair between 1873 and 1911, creating some of the most recognisable portraits of leading political, literary and theatrical figures of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.
