FILDES, Sir Luke (1843-1927). Autograph letter signed concerning copies of his State Portrait of King George V. 6 May 1912.
Single page folded, written on three sides, on 11 Melbury Road, Kensington headed paper. Old folds, a few minor marks and creases, otherwise good.
Fildes acknowledges receipt of photographs and thanks his correspondent for the opportunity of seeing them. He has no copying work available at present, but adds that when the question of copies of The King's State Portrait arises he will consider the recipient's application.
The portrait referred to was Fildes's monumental State Portrait of King George V, painted in 1911-12 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1912. The principal version remains in the Royal Collection, with a number of official replicas subsequently produced.
