£250.00Price

HERSCHEL, Sir John Frederick William (1792-1871). Autograph note concerning the Dean of Westminster. 19 June, n.d.

Autograph note signed, one page, written in black ink and dated "19 June" at foot. A few small marks, light handling and old fold, otherwise very good.

A brief note to the Dean of Westminster and a request. Herschel states that enquiries will be made and asks that another individual call upon him to explain how matters now stand.

Sir John Herschel was one of the leading British scientists of the nineteenth century and the son of astronomer William Herschel. A mathematician, astronomer and pioneering experimental photographer, he undertook an extensive survey of the southern skies from the Cape of Good Hope and made major contributions to the study and cataloguing of nebulae and double stars. His photographic experiments included the introduction of the terms "positive" and "negative" and the development of the cyanotype process. Any signed note by Herschel is rare.
